Why your first customer leaves: what we found testing 37 newly launched apps

We tested 37 newly launched AI-built apps: 17 whose makers had just asked for feedback in public, and 20 from an AI app builder's public launch showcase. An AI agent used each one the way a first customer would: impatient, on a phone, clicking the obvious things.

28 of the 37 (76%) had at least one problem that would stop that customer. The most common was sign-up or login trouble (14 of the 37 apps), then an error or blank page instead of the page (7). Almost none were dramatic crashes. They were dead ends: moments where the obvious next step doesn't work, and a stranger simply leaves. You never hear about it.

These are the six kinds of dead end we saw, with real examples and how to check your own app.

1. Links that go nowhere

A footer icon opens a blank page, a card links to a page that doesn't load, a mistyped address shows raw code instead of an error page.

Check: click every link on your home page and footer, on your phone.

2. An error instead of the page

"Server error" when searching, signing in with certain emails, or opening a free page. Worse: an error that says "try again" when trying again never works.

Check: do the one main thing your app is for, three times, with different inputs.

3. A blocked first screen

New visitors must create an account before seeing anything; two popups cover the start button; a cookie notice hides the main choices; a blank screen with no loading sign.

Check: open your app in a private window as a stranger. Within five seconds, can you tell what it does and what to press?

4. Sign-up that fails

The Terms you must accept won't open; the code you type gets replaced; the confirmation email never comes.

Check: sign up with a brand-new email, start to finish.

5. It looks unfinished

Template listings left in, a price that reads "From $", words jammed together. Nothing is broken, but a stranger stops trusting it.

Check: read every visible word on your first three screens.

6. Nobody can find it

The site tells search engines to stay away, and there's no sitemap.
