Accessibility widget vs a real fix: what changes in your Shopify theme's code
Updated
Short answer: an accessibility widget (also called an overlay) is a script that loads in each visitor's browser and changes the page there. It doesn't change your theme's files. A fix in code changes the theme itself (the Liquid templates, CSS and JavaScript) or the content in your Shopify admin, so every visitor and every tool gets the corrected page. Some stores use both. Only the second changes the theme itself.

What does a widget do?
You add a script, usually through an app or a line in the theme. When a page loads, the script runs in the visitor's browser. Depending on the product it may:
- show a menu with buttons for bigger text, higher contrast or stopped animations;
- try to add missing labels or image descriptions while the page is open;
- change how parts of the page behave for a keyboard or a screen reader.
Your theme files stay the same. If the script doesn't load, is blocked, or misses a problem, the visitor gets the original page.
What does a fix in the theme change?
The problem is corrected where it lives:
| Problem | Where the fix goes |
|---|---|
| Product photo with no alt text | Shopify admin, product media alt text (Shopify Help Center) |
| Banner or section image with no alt text | Theme editor |
| Low text contrast (WCAG asks for at least 4.5:1 for normal text, 1.4.3) | Theme colors or the theme's CSS |
| No visible focus outline when tabbing | Theme CSS |
| Menu, size picker or cart drawer that doesn't work with a keyboard | Theme Liquid and JavaScript |
| Search or email field with no label | Theme Liquid (the form markup) |
| Heading levels that skip or repeat (Shopify's guidance says heading tags should be used in sequence) | Theme Liquid sections |
Shopify's own theme guidance covers the same areas: keyboard and focus, page structure, headings, images and media, color and contrast, drawers and modals, and touch targets (Shopify theme accessibility best practices). Shopify adds that following those practices alone "doesn't guarantee that your theme is completely accessible".
What do official sources say about widgets?
- U.S. Department of Justice: "Automated accessibility checkers and overlays that identify or fix problems with your website can be helpful tools", but "they need to be used carefully", and "a 'clean' report does not necessarily mean everything is accessible". Our AI agent can find the cause, fix it in your code and test your live app again. See pricing. The FTC said the company "claimed the plug-in accessWidget can make any website compliant with Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG)", and the order bars misleading claims (FTC, 22 Apr 2025).
- Lawsuit trackers: EcomBack counted 496 lawsuits in the first half of 2026 (24.25% of the total) against websites that already had a widget or overlay installed (EcomBack 2026 mid-year report). EcomBack is a company in the accessibility business. The count doesn't show how many stores run a widget and were not sued.
Should I remove my widget?
That's your choice. Some visitors like the menu (bigger text, stopped animations). Before you rely on it, check your store with the widget turned off: that is the page your theme really serves. Then fix those problems in the theme and the admin.
FAQ
Does a widget make my store ADA compliant?
No product should promise that; the FTC order above shows the risk of that claim. A widget can help some visitors; the problems in your theme's code are still there.
Can a fix in code break my theme?
Any theme change can. Work on a copy of the theme (in your Shopify admin: Online Store, then Themes, then the three-dot menu next to your theme, then Duplicate, as in Shopify's steps), check the copy, then publish it, and re-check the live store afterwards.
How do I know what my theme gets wrong?
Run an automated checker on your home, collection, product and cart pages with the widget off, then try each page with only a keyboard. Automated checkers find some issues, not all of them.
