PHP 8.2 end of life on 31 December 2026: what WordPress and WooCommerce owners should do now

Updated

Short answer: security support for PHP 8.2 ends on 31 December 2026 (PHP: supported versions). After that date PHP 8.2 gets no more fixes. PHP.net says users of an unsupported release "should upgrade as soon as possible, as they may be exposed to unpatched security vulnerabilities."

WordPress recommends PHP 8.3 or greater, and WooCommerce asks for PHP 8.3 or greater (tested up to PHP 8.4). To get there:

  1. Check your PHP version in Tools > Site Health > Info > Server.
  2. Back up your site.
  3. Update WordPress, your theme and your plugins.
  4. Check them for PHP problems.
  5. Ask your host to move the site to PHP 8.3 or 8.4.
  6. Test your live site.

When does PHP 8.2 reach end of life?

PHP 8.2 security support ends on 31 December 2026. Its active support (regular bug fixes) already ended on 31 December 2024.

From PHP.net's supported versions and end of life pages, as of 5 November 2026:

PHP versionSecurity support until
8.1already ended (31 December 2025)
8.231 December 2026
8.331 December 2027
8.431 December 2028
8.531 December 2029

Each PHP version gets two years of active support, then "two additional years for critical security issues only". After that, PHP.net says it "is no longer supported".

Will my WordPress site stop working on 1 January 2027?

End of life does not switch PHP off. It means no new security fixes come for PHP 8.2 from PHP itself.

WordPress itself still runs on older versions: "WordPress also works with PHP 7.4+". It adds that these versions "have reached their official End Of Life and may expose your site to security vulnerabilities" (WordPress: requirements). Hosts set their own rules for versions past end of life, so ask yours what it will do with PHP 8.2 sites.

Which PHP version should a WordPress or WooCommerce site move to?

PHP 8.3 or 8.4. Both are in the range WordPress and WooCommerce recommend today.

PHP 8.5 is newer than the version WooCommerce lists as tested, so a store is on safer ground with 8.3 or 8.4 for now.

How do I update PHP on WordPress safely?

Follow WordPress's own steps: back up, update everything, check compatibility, then switch PHP through your host (WordPress: update PHP).

  1. Check your current version: Tools > Site Health > Info tab > Server > PHP version. WordPress: "If this number is at or higher than PHP 8.3, then you don't need to update PHP at this time!"
  2. Back up your site: "a backup will let you revert your site to how it is right now in the event anything goes wrong."
  3. Update WordPress, themes and plugins: Dashboard > Updates, "and then update everything", then check that your site works.
  4. Check PHP compatibility: "install the PHP Compatibility Checker plugin to check your themes and plugins for possible issues." WordPress warns it "may miss items or flag false positives".
  5. Fix what it flags: if a theme or plugin has a problem, WordPress says to "get in touch with the theme or plugin developer and ask them to investigate."
  6. Switch PHP: look for the PHP version setting in your hosting control panel. If you can't find it, WordPress says to "email your hosting company and ask them to help!"
  7. Test your live site after the switch: the pages people buy or sign up on, not only the home page.

What should I test after changing the PHP version?

Test what your customers do, on the live site: checkout and payment, account sign-up and login, contact and booking forms, emails your site sends, and your WordPress admin.

A plugin that is not ready for the new PHP version can break one page or one step while the rest of the site looks fine. That's why the compatibility check and a live test both matter.

Does WordPress warn me about an old PHP version?

Yes. WordPress shows a warning such as "PHP Update Required" or "PHP Update Recommended" on the Dashboard or in Site Health. It calls these "important reminders to update PHP and make your site more secure."
